The Melgaard OAE Young Conductor Scheme 2012

The Melgaard OAE Young Conductor scheme presents a fantastic opportunity for a young conductor to work with a closely knit period instrument orchestra, utilising the players, conductors of international standing and management as assets. The scheme was originally launched in 2008 and previous selected conductors have included Philipp von Steinaecker, Eduardo Portal and Kevin Griffiths.

The scheme is very generously supported by OAE patrons Greg and Gail Melgaard and we are incredibly grateful for their financial support.

We’re pleased to announced our Melgaard OAE Young Conductor for 2012 is David Reiland, aged 31, from Belgium, who secured the prize after beating four other shortlisted candidates from across Europe.

The self governing OAE players judge the Melgaard OAE Young Conductor competition and the apprentice benefits from the Orchestra’s constructive criticism on their conducting skills over the coming year.

Our OAE Melgaard Young Conductor David Reiland started work with us back in December, working on our Messiah project with Laurence Cummings in London, Utrecht and Paris.  Recently he has been working with us on our Romeo and Juliet project with Sir Mark Elder, starting with our February Royal Festival Hall concert in London (David was conducting one of the hidden backstage male choruses), then touring to Basingstoke, the Roundhouse in Camden for the Night Shift and Paris (again).  In March he will spend a few days in the office learning things from the other side of the orchestral world fence.
