Tue 2 February 2010 :: 7.30pm St Georges, Bristol Beethoven Symphonies Series Beethoven Symphony No 4 in B flat Beethoven Symphony No 7 in A
Vladimir Jurowski conductor
The OAE’s Beethoven Symphonies Series gets off to an electrifying start with the under-appreciated Symphony 4. It’s hard to understand why – it is one of the most dramatic of all the symphonies, with passages of graceful lyricism contrasted with high octane music-making. The seventh symphony is undoubtedly a reflection of the time it was written, during the Napoleonic wars. It’s one of the most popular of all Beethoven symphonies – and was indeed one of the composers’ greatest financial successes!
The Bristol concert is kindly supported by Orchestras Live.

Thu 11 February 2010 :: 1.00pm St George Bristol Lunchtime Concert Mozart Serenade in C minor K388 Beethoven Octet Op.103
Anthony Robson oboe Cherry Forbes oboe Antony Pay clarinet Katherine Spencer clarinet Andrew Watts bassoon Phil Turbett bassoon Andrew Clark horn Martin Lawrence horn
The Soloists of the OAE bring their technical assurance and the finest of detail to Mozart's darkly passionate masterpiece, the Wind Serenade, the eloquent phrasing of the players underlining the Serenade's unusual and atypical, even radical, character.
In his four-movement Octet, Beethoven demonstrated that he could be just as charming and delightful as Mozart when he wanted to be, the OAE soloists' sheer vitality and impeccable ensemble capturing his irresistible humour. TICKETS 0845 40 24 001 tiny.cc/1bKHT

Purcell Room Beethoven Symphonies Study Day Christopher Cook presenter Professor John Deathridge speaker Stephen Johnson speaker Professor Robin Stowell speaker Jonathan Del Mar speaker
This year's study day ties into our main season focus - Beethoven's symphonies. In the morning session at 11am we look at the historical context of the symphonies, looking at the events, politics and culture of Beethoven's time, before going onto look at how Beethoven's music responded to these events around him. During the afternoon session we will examine how a period instrument ensemble such as the OAE performs Beethoven's music as well as looking at other approaches to it. To round the day off we will take an in-depth look at and analysis of the Symphony No. 3, Eroica.
The morning session is suitable for everyone, no musical knowledge required, while for the afternoon session some musical knowledge would be beneficial.
Tickets £12 per session, £6 concessions, £4 full time students (11am and 2pm)
