David Reiland
We are pleased to announce that our 2011-2012 OAE Melgaard Young Conductor is David Reiland, aged 31, from Belgium, who secured the position after beating four other shortlisted candidates from across Europe. During the 50 minute audition he conducted the Orchestra in arias from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and Haydn’s London symphony.
As well as close mentoring by OAE musicians, David will be learning from some of the world’s greatest conductors. These include newly appointed OAE Principal Artist, Sir Mark Elder who recently led the Orchestra in the BBC4 Series Symphony, and joins the OAE for a performance of Berlioz’s Romeo and Juliet in February 2012; and Sir Simon Rattle, long standing Principal Artist, with a programme of Faure, Ravel and Debussy in June. David has begun his journey with the OAE working with Laurence Cummings with a tour of Handel’s Messiah, performed in London, Paris and Utrecht this month.
David has worked with the Lucerne Festival (with Pierre Boulez), Sinfonietta Berlin and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra amongst others as guest or assistant conductor. He is also principal guest conductor of the “United Instruments of Lucilin Ensemble” which promotes contemporary music and the creation of new works.
