Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen
Strauss Selection of songs
Mahler Das Lied von der Erde

Thomas Kemp conductor
Kate Royal soprano
Toby Spence tenor
Dietrich Henschel baritone

The Oxford Lieder Festival gets off to a stunning start with two of Mahler’s great vocal works in chamber orchestrations. Then we play a selection of Strauss’ best-known songs in newly-uncovered arrangements that were originally intended for the cinema and silent movies and Arnold Schoenberg’s orchestration Mahler’s epic ‘song symphony’ Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth). This transcendental masterpiece, written in a time of great turmoil for Mahler, sets ancient Chinese poetry in German translation, exploring profound themes of life and death.
