In this workshop amateur singers are invited to join Rob Howarth, OAE keyboard director and a professional soloist, to have a closer look at some of the Passion choruses.

Every Easter, Bach’s Passions are performed up and down the country – as much a part of the musical calendar as Handel’s Messiah.

This is a unique opportunity to get to know some of the choruses better to enrich your listening experience, in the company of OAE principal keyboardist, Robert Howarth. We’ll be taking a closer look at some of the more dramatic choruses, both in terms of their music and context, and also singing them, with a professional soloist taking the role of the Evangelist.

Suitable for all singers – some knowledge of the Passions beneficial, but not essential.

Sessions lasts 3 hours including break.

  • Do you know at this point which choruses will be focused on? Also, do participants bring their own score? Thanks

  • Hi Bryan,
All bookers will be emailed by the end of this week about scores and more specific details for the day but I can confirm that we’ll be looking the following sections: St John: Numbers 2b and d, 12b, 16b, 18b, 21d and 27b. St Matthew: Numbers 27b, 36b and d, 38b, 45b, 50b and d, 53b and 58b and d and hopefully ending with everyone singing Ecce, quomodo of Jacob Handl as the Passions always ended that way in Bach’s day…depending on time!
    Hope this helps.
