The Works is the OAE’s unique series that gives audiences a guided tour of selected classical masterpieces.
This time, the series turns its attention to Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater (meaning ‘the Mother stood’), probably his best-known sacred work, which was later arranged by a number of other famous composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach. This beautiful, melancholic hymn is one of the most powerful and moving pieces written in the 18th century, the introduction described by one French writer as “the most perfect and most touching to have come from the pen of any musician”.
Let director Steven Devine and our presenter guide you through the music movement by movement, with a complete performance following a Q&A with the artists. There’s music in the bar before the concert together with a chance to meet musicians afterwards.
Drinks are welcome in the hall.
