Purcell / The Man
Henry Purcell is often hailed as England’s greatest composer. Ever. Sadly, his genius was cut short by an early death at the age of just 36. Nevertheless, he’d written enough masterpieces in his short life to ensure his place in the history books and the concert hall for the rest of time.
Purcell / The Music
His music is foot-tappingly good, sometimes touching and often dramatic – not surprising when he worked in theatre for much of his life. As well as writing the opera Dido and Aeneas he worked on several ‘populist extravaganzas’ (as described by the Rough Guide to Classical Music), which mixed song, dance and theatre up to sensational effect.
