For #TakeYourDogToWorkDay, here's our Barney on location in the Visiting Orchestra Manager's office @glyndebourne https://t.co/M0e474HYes
On Saturday 12th October we took part in the annual Guardian event The Big Draw at Kings Place. Two OAE musicians; Katherine Spencer (clarinet) and Joanna Lawrence (violin), supplied the music for the ‘draw what you hear’ workshops. Katherine and Jo added an extra element to the workshop by playing pieces that audience members drew for them. During the day, the Observer’s political cartoonist, Chris Riddell, gave a talk and then stopped by our workshop to draw the musicians while they were playing. The fantastic characterful portraits took Chris about 5 minutes (see the result above).
The musicians also commissioned a graphic score from artist Michael Challenger for violin, clarinet and two escalators. The piece had its premiere performance to finish off the day using the two huge escalators that span three floors at Kings Place. Jo started from the top and Katherine from the bottom, and their moving music stands (myself and Projects and Education trainee Hannah Cooper) handily went with them on their musical-mechanical journey, much to the joy (and surprise) of suspecting and unsuspecting patrons of Kings Place.
It was a real delight to be part of this special day and to see music and art come together in such a creative way.
