Now time for some music by Felix Mendelssohn's good friend, Prince Albert (i.e. Queen Victoria's husband).… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Our TOTS concerts this Sunday at the Southbank Centre are fast approaching so we thought we’d give you a little idea of what to expect, especially if it’s your first TOTS experience.
Presented by OAE double bassist Cecelia Bruggemeyer, we’ll feature six early brass players who will introduce you to the exciting and colourful world of cornetts, sackbuts and many more unusual instruments.  Focusing on Tudor repertoire, expect a joyous journey for under 6s involving music from King Henry the Eighth himself.  The concert will include the following pieces plus a few other triumphant Tudor treats:

  • Cornish Dance Anon
  • L’Albana Affetti
  • Mon coeur gist tousjours Anon
  • Toccata from Orfeo Montiverdi
  • The Antyck, Tune of the Buffens Arbeau
  • Bransle Officiale Anon
  • Pastyme with Good Companye Henry VIII
  • Washerwomen’s Branle Arbeau
  • En vrai amoure Henry VIII

Bring your singing voices, clapping hands and jumping feet as we all explore the majestic world of Tudor music!

  • My first experience of OAE on Saturday with my 3 1/2 yr old son and have to say disappointed. Far too much talking and not enough music. And some of the music selection far too sombre for such a young audience. The duration should have been about right but my son watched intently at the start, got restless by 20 mins and asked to go home by 40 mins.

Some of the audience participation worked – e.g. asking a volunteer to set the tempo for the drum – but some was hopelessly misjudged: a detailed explanation of the difference between a sackbut and a trombone was ridiculously misjudged for an audience of 3/4 year olds.

Such a shame because a missed opportunity to enthuse my son, who usually loves to watch anyone play music.
