I’m Ivan Rockey and I joined the OAE in 2014 as Director of Finance & Operations. I have a degree in Music from Oxford University, an MBA from the Open University, and I’ve worked in classical music for almost 20 years, including as Concert Manager of the English Chamber Orchestra, General Manager of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra and Executive Director of British Youth Opera.
My role at the OAE is to oversee financial and operational matters for an organisation with a turnover of around £3m that performs in dozens of countries – from the day-to-day financial management to the long-term business planning.
I’m also responsible for ensuring we comply with the legal, financial and regulatory aspects of doing business and that we practice good governance – something which is particularly important for us as a registered charity.
Financial management in performing arts charities is all about balancing the expense and risk inherent in creating great performances with ensuring the organisation’s long-term viability. Achieving this in a self-governing orchestra is just one of the things that makes working for the OAE so interesting!
Away from the OAE I spend much of my time playing the clarinet in some of London’s top amateur orchestras.
