Jan Schlapp

After studying English Literature in Edinburgh, Jan Schlapp came to London to study violin at the Royal Academy of Music with Sidney Humphries. By the time she left she was playing mainly viola and when she met Catherine Mackintosh she was enticed into the world of period performance, joining the English Concert shortly after. There followed several years in the 70s and 80s when she played as principal in the English Baroque Soloists, The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, and the London Classical Players.

She was married to the late Tim Mason who was one of the founders of OAE. Joining the Orchestra for its second concert, she has seen it expand into a major player on the orchestral scene. She acted as vice-chairman for 6 years, and still loves what she does.

In her spare time she does pastel drawing, writing, and gardening and is training as a life coach.
