Clare Connors OAE Corelli

Contemporary composer Clare Connors received acclaim for her Kraftwerk arrangements and collaborations with artists such as Michael Nyman and David Byrne of Talking Heads.

She joins us for Gamechangers: Arcangelo Corelli at Queen Elizabeth Hall on 31 October, where we perform her brand new piece Corelli Leaves. Here she answers a few quick questions.

When did you realize you wanted to make music your career?
When I was 20, but I always thought of it as making music, not a career.

Who’s your favourite musician/band at the moment (doesn’t have to be classical)?
I like listening to new things, I loved a Sarah Vaughan album I borrowed from the library recently.

How do you approach composing a piece?
When I picture a situation in the future where there is new music, I hear the music in my head. I also write small fragments of music pretty regularly, each time I pick up my violin, or at the piano. Every now and then I return to these and expand them. Sometimes I improvise…..

When you’re not busy practicing/performing, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Looking at the garden and wildlife, hanging out with the family, mooching about.

Who’s your musical hero?
Joni Mitchell.

If you could choose to work in a different profession, what would it be and why?
Something where I could be useful or help people.

What do you fear the most?
Big trucks on the road. People destroying each other and the planet.

Who’s your favourite musician/band at the moment (doesn’t have to be classical)?
I liked Aluna George on Later (with Jools Holland).

What’s the best thing about working with the OAE?
Great people, exemplary standards.

Who would you most like to meet and why?
Janina David.

Which book do you think everybody should read?
A Square of Sky, Janina David.

What’s the last great film you watched?
The Spirit of 45′ Ken Loach.

What’s the most embarrassing CD you own?
Can’t think of any.

Send us the best photo on your phone.
