As rehearsals for V4: The Seasons stopped for a well-earned coffee break, we took the opportunity to speak with dancer Edward Kitchen.

When did you decide you wanted to become a dancer?
It all happened quite gradually. I always wanted to be a Fashion Designer and dance was something I just ‘did’. It wasn’t until I got a place at a dance school that I realised I could actually do this as a career.

What was your breakthrough moment?
Getting my first job. I worked on an independent art film with Wayne Sleep for David Hockney’s most recent exhibition- A Bigger Picture.

What do you fear the most?
I have a weird thing about bumpy surfaces. That, and breaking a leg.

Which mobile number do you call the most?
My mum’s.

What – or where – is perfection?
Sitting in a coffee shop and getting lost in a good book.

Who is your favourite hero from fiction (book/comic/film/opera) – and why?
I remember having a bit of an obsession with the film The Craft when I was younger. I was into the gothic look back then and tried to copy the way the characters dressed.

What’s your favourite ritual?
Yoga. It does wonders for stress.

Which living person do you most admire (and why)?
Grace Coddington for her modesty and not giving a damn what anyone else thinks.

What other talent or skill would you like to possess?
I’d love to be able to speak French again. I did it at A Level and it gradually slipped when I left college.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
When life gives you lemons…make lemonade.

What is the most played piece of music on your MP3 player or in your CD collection?
Will You Still Love me Tomorrow? by The Shirelles is one of my favourite songs of all time.

What’s the best thing about working with the OAE?
They inspire me to move.
