Comments from previous Interns
“Working as an Intern at the OAE was an absolutely top experience. Not only is it a fantastic way to set up a career in the music industry, it is also really interesting and great fun: I felt completely welcome from day one and I am still friends with the people who work there. You are given the opportunity to learn about all aspects of working with an orchestra, as well as the chance to meet other people at the same stage as you and discover more about where your future career path might take you. Above all, it has a great sense of structure: there are plenty of opportunities to work on big projects and learn new things throughout the 6 months, and the people you are working with really care about your future and will help you secure that amazing first job! If you are thinking about working with an orchestra and need a place to start, I really can’t recommend it enough.”
Camilla Begg, Development and Marketing Intern, Nov 07- April 08

“Interning at the OAE has been an invaluable opportunity to see from the inside how an arts organisation functions. Whilst developing a range of transferable administrative skills, I've also been able to gain knowledge specific to the Arts, which will stand me in good stead for future employment in the sector. Interning at the OAE has given me access to rehearsals of a very high quality orchestra working with leading conductors: a privilege I've found immensely interesting and enjoyable, and through which I've gained a greater understanding of the processes of music-making. Moreover, the OAE administration is a small, informal and extremely friendly team who create a very welcoming working environment.”
Jonathan Gross, Planning Intern September '05 to March '06

“It has been a fantastic experience working an Education Intern for the OAE. I have learnt so much having been involved in the training sessions for education projects on the programme and attending sessions in schools. I have also had the opportunity to develop my writing skills and have put together schedules and evaluations for projects on the Enlightening Education programme. Everyone is really friendly and helpful at the OAE – staff and players involved in the programme and recommend anyone thinking about pursuing a career in arts administration or education to apply.”
Caroline Cooper, Education Intern September '05 to March '06

"Overall, being an intern with the OAE has been a real eye opening experience, learning and being welcomed into the heart of a vibrant arts organisation from the start of the tenure. One of the most welcomed aspects of being an intern, on this Arts administration scheme, is the chance you have to participate in a wide variety of tasks, contributing and experiencing all aspects of the job, being in contact with all departments constantly, having a good, close working relationship with everyone (not just marketing and development)"
Michael Windsor-Ungureanu, Development and Marketing Intern September '05 to March '06.

“It was such a fantastic experience and opportunity to work with the OAE. I not only learnt how an orchestra is run but gained experience and knowledge in all aspects of the music industry. For example my experience of working with artists and agents in particular gave me a very good idea of how that side of the industry works and crystallised my view that I would like a career in artist management. I now have a job as an assistant artist manager and I know I would certainly not be here if it wasn't for my training and support that I gained at the OAE. It was also a fantastic opportunity to hear one of the top period instrument orchestras in the world perform nearly every weak....what a treat!”
Nicki Wenham, Planning Intern, March to September '05

“Being an intern at the OAE was a great opportunity for me, in fact I liked it so much I couldn’t leave (I am still here 4 years later working as the Assistant Projects Manager). It was an excellent way to get a foot in the door of an Arts organisation, and was much more fulfilling than a school-type work experience placement. I was treated like a proper member of staff with a real sense of responsibility. It was a great way to start my career.”
Ceri Jones, Planning Intern July '03 to March '04
