The Night Shift
Shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society award for Best Audience Development 2007, the Night Shift is a new way to enjoy classical music.

The Night Shift is kindly supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

"It was fabulous and we can’t wait for the next one – a wonderful idea, brilliantly executed – well done!"
A audience member at the 20 May Night Shift

"The formula has achieved what for any arts organisation is the Holy Grail: a ‘ways in’ event that has built a genuinely youthful following."
Culture Capital

The Night Shift is all about being able to enjoy great music in a relaxed atmosphere, so it strips away all those strange rules of classical concerts. You can bring a drink in, go out to get one, and don’t have to worry about clapping in the wrong place. The important thing is the music.

We'd love to hear what you think about our events so feel free to email us at nightshift@oae.co.uk. Here are some of the comments we've had so far:

"Everyone was in good spirits throughout and the orchestra were most impressive. The atmosphere was unlike the stuffy, pretentious feeling that surrounds most classical evenings, and the organisers managed to maintain this right through to the DJ at the bar after the main event."

‘Just wanted to say I was at last nights Nightshift and I absolutely loved it, was such a warm and friendly atmosphere, will be attending every one from now on, and the Cello Singer before the gig she was amazing also, thanks for a great night.’

'Thanks for a truly brilliant concert on Tuesday, with Robert Levin. Absolutely spine-tinglingly electric!'
'Amazing value. I can't believe it's only 4 pounds with a free beer. Brilliant night.'

"Thanks for another brilliant Night Shift last night! Fantastic! I LOVE these events :)"

‘Last Thursday I attended the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and what a brilliant evening it was! The atmosphere was very relaxed and not the least bit intimidating. The orchestra was engaging, entertaining, and wonderful to listen to. Our group had a fun evening, something I would not have associated with a classical music concert before... Thanks for making classical music come to life for non-musos like me!’

"Another wonderful event, and as always thoroughly enjoyed it. Nightshift provides a truly unique experience to engage with the musicians, so let’s have plenty more!"

"It was the first NS I've attended and I thought it was a brilliant event. It would be great if they were monthly..."

"Best of all was the reaction of the audience: enthusiastic standing ovations at the end, real concentration during the performances, and some judicious beer-swilling. Without selling the music short, the OAE has created a winner with the Night Shift - or rather, its audience has." Tom Service, The Guardian
