Standing alongside Mozart, Beethoven is one of the giants of music. Often characterised as a wild and unpredictable man, his fiery moods can be attributed to his rage at his gradual loss of hearing – in fact his most famous piece, the Ode to Joy was composed while he was completely deaf.

This thrilling piece was composed in the midst of the Napoeonic wars, and is today most famous for its edge of seat ending. Also on the bill is the dramatic and muscular Coriolan overture. |
