Handel / The Man
Handel wasn't British, but he was in a way an honorary Brit - he lived here for almost 50 years, and in many ways is Purcell's successor and perhaps the nation's favourite composer. He died in London and is buried in Westminster Abbey - you can still see his tomb there today.
Handel / The Music
Handel is one of the true giants of classical music (or come to think of it, music, full stop). Maybe best known for his Messiah, he wrote a HUGE amount of music - including many operas. His style is direct, full of rhythm and with a real drive to it. Plus, he was a fantastic tunesmith. This aria may be familiar to those of you who came to our last event - but it has different lyrics - we'll explain why on the night. |
