Montage of OAE players 2011-2012 Season

Sunday 10 June, 7pm, Royal Festival Hall
French Impressionists

We end the season with a bang as we bring our Principal Artist and fabulous conductor, Sir Simon Rattle and the renowned pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard to London, following a European Tour.

The concert features four masterpieces rarely heard on period instruments, with all the excitement and energy that they can bring. The evening concludes with Debussy’s powerful evocation of the sea, it’s almost like seeing a picture painted in front of your eyes…but by an orchestra.

Fauré Suite – Pelléas et Mélisande
Ravel Piano Concerto for the left hand

Sunday 10 June, 10pm, Royal Festival Hall
The Night Shift

London’s ground-breaking classical night, The Night Shift, returns for its last appearance at Southbank Centre until the autumn.

For this event we’re joined by one of the most famous conductors on the planet, Sir Simon Rattle, who conducts the 80-piece Orchestra in two pieces by Claude Debussy.

Debussy’s music is all about light, shade, texture and colour, and these pieces are no exception – the prelude is a dazzling piece some have described as giving birth to modern music. ‘La Mer’ is a brilliant depiction of the sea, written in the perhaps unlikely surroundings of Eastbourne.

The hour-long concert is presented from the stage by Alistair Appleton who talks to Sir Simon and the musicians about the music and instruments featured.
Drinks are welcome in the auditorium and bars are open throughout.

Enjoy live music in the bar beforehand from 9pm and there’s a DJ afterwards until midnight – full details to be announced.
